PACKWOOD -- The Winfield-Mt. Union basketball teams were swept on Tuesday night in their SEISC North Division road trip to Pekin. The Wolves fell 45-24 in the girls’ game and 76-24 in the boys’ game.
The girls’ team looked good through two quarters. After trailing 10-9 after the first quarter, W-MU battled back to tie the game at 18-18 by halftime. Pekin blew the Wolves out in the third quarter, however, taking it 18-0 to grab a 36-18 lead going into the final quarter. W-MU scored just six points in the entire second hald.
Jenna Buffington had 11 points, eight rebounds and three steals in the loss. Jobey Malone scored three points and pulled down six rebounds. Ali Cockerham, Farrah Nelson, Carlee Sloan, Madie Anderson and Liana Sweezer put up two points apiece.
The W-MU boys had trouble containing Pekin’s offense. The Panthers led 22-8 after one quarter and 43-17 at halftime. Pekin led 59-23 after the third quarter and continued to pour it on in the fourth.
Ty Yocum had nine points in the loss. Christian Gerot scored seven.
The W-MU girls are now 3-10. The boys are 0-12. Both teams will be at Wapello on Friday, Jan. 11, for their next doubleheader.
