Tigers top Pekin, fall against Cardinal

NEW LONDON — It has been an up-and-down week for the New London baseball team. The Tigers won a slugfest 12-7 at Pekin on Monday, but got shut out 6-1 against Cardinal on Tuesday.

On Monday, New London and Pekin were tied at 5-5 after two innings. New London scored four in the third to take a 9-5 lead. Pekin scored one in the bottom of the third. New London put up one in the fifth and two in the seventh to take a 12-6 lead, but Pekin put up one run in the seventh.

Darius Whaley had a ridiculous day, going 4-5 with two triples, a double and four RBIs. Shae Summerfield went 4-5 with three RBIs. Jaxon Allen was 2-3 with two RBIs. Carter Allen went 2-5 with a double and an RBI, and Mason Porter was 1-5 with an RBI.

Jaxon started the game, going one and one-third innings and giving up five runs (three earned) on two hits and two walks, while striking out one batter. Seth Bailey threw five and two-thirds innings in relief, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks, while striking out three.

The Tigers were tied 1-1 with Cardinal after one inning on Tuesday. The Comets scored the last five runs of the game, tallying one in the second, two in the third, one in the fifth and one in the seventh.

New London had just five hits in the loss. Jaxon went 1-4 with New London’s only RBI of the game. Summerfield was 2-4 with an RBI.

Whaley was on the mound for six and one-third innings. He gave up six runs (three earned) on six hits and four walks, while striking out two. Summerfield scored two-thirds of an inning and gave up no hits or walks.

New London is now 207 overall. They’ll head to Donnellson to take on Central Lee on Thursday, June 13.
