MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. — The Iowa Wesleyan softball team had a tough task ahead of them as they returned from a day off to play a triple-header on Thursday. The Tigers played three games throughout the day and came away with two wins. They opened with a 3-0 shutout win against Immaculata University and followed with a late inning 8-6 win over SUNY-Poly. In their final game of the day, the Tigers bats came up short as they fell 7-4 to Franciscan University.
The first game of the day turned out to be a tough pitcher’s duel, with both teams being held scoreless through five innings. Iowa Wesleyan was finally able to break through and get on the board in the top of the sixth by scoring two runs. The Tigers took advantage of four hits in the inning, and Allison Daum and Morgan Christner each recorded RBIs to bring in the two runs. In the top of the seventh, McKenna Woolery led off with a double to left field. Emilee Rooney pinch ran for Woolery and would come around to score off a double by Emma McDanel. Immaculata threatened to score in the bottom of the seventh, but the Tiger defense held strong and came away with the 3-0 shutout.
Morgan Christner recorded her third shutout of the season and her third game with over ten strikeouts. Christner struck out 12 of the 28 batters faced and earned her fourth win of the season.
SUNY-Poly took the early lead in Iowa Wesleyan’s second game of the day with two runs in the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers took the lead in the top of the fifth inning. Alex Eyman hit a line drive to left field to drive in the first two IW runs. Emma McDanel followed with an RBI single to second base to bring home Eyman and give the Tigers a 3-2 lead. SUNY-Poly’s offense added four runs in the bottom of the fifth to put them back in front, but their lead was short lived. Iowa Wesleyan answered with four runs of their own in the top of the sixth and added a run in the seventh after an error by the catcher. IW’s defense shut down SUNY-Poly in the seventh to secure their second win of the day.
The Tiger offense recorded 14 hits, including doubles by Allison Daum, Alex Eyman, and Kayla Ford. Emma McDanel led the team with three RBIs. Daum earned the win after pitching 4.2 innings.
Iowa Wesleyan jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with the help of a double by Alex Eyman. Franciscan answered with three runs in the bottom half of the first and one run in the second. The Tigers came back to tie the game at 4-4 when Allison Daum doubled to left to drive in one run and came around to score after Emma McDanel singled up the middle. Those proved to be the final two runs for the Tigers, and Franciscan regained the lead in the bottom of the fourth with three runs. Both teams would fail to score in the final three innings, and IW would suffer their first loss of the day.
Kayla Ford and Alex Eyman led the Tigers with two hits a piece, and Eyman recorded a team high two runs batted in. Emma McDanel pitched five innings and recorded three strikeouts for Iowa Wesleyan.
IW is now 6-3 overall and will wrap up their spring break trip with two games tomorrow. They will start the day against Morrisville State at 10:30 a.m. central time.
