MYRTLE BEACH, SC - Things are looking bright for the Iowa Wesleyan softball team. The Tigers kicked off their 2019 season on Sunday with two games in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Tigers took both games, beating La Roche 3-0 and Fitchburg State 5-4.
Former New London star Morgan Christner had a dominant day in the circle. In game one, she shut La Roche out, giving up just one hit and one walk, while striking out 15 batters.
Christner also had the go-ahead RBI. She doubled home a run in the top of the first inning to break the scoreless tie. Allison Daum added another with an RBI single, putting the Tigers up 2-0.
In the top of the sixth, McKenzie Woolery brought home another run on an RBI infield-single. That ended the scoring at 3-0 in favor of the Tigers.
The Tigers struck first again in game two. In the bottom of the second inning, Wollery brought home two runners on an RBI single to right field, one of which scored on an error. Emmy Rodriguez brought in Woolery with an RBI single later in the inning and it was 3-0 Tigers.
Fitchburg State scored one run in the top of the third, but the Tigers responded with an RBI single from Daum in the fifth. IW led 4-1 going into the final two innings.
Fitchburg State rallied in the sixth inning to score three runs and tie it up at 4-4, but Rodriguez had the eventual game-winning RBI single in the sixth.
Emma McDanel started game two and threw 5.2 innings, giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits and two walks, while striking out three batters. Christner came in to pitch in relief and got the win, throwing 1.1 innings and striking out two batters, while giing up no hits or walks.
The Tigers were back in action today (Monday), playing two more games. The News will have results from those games in Tuesday’s issue of The News.
