There are less than two weeks left in the Southeast Conference regular season, and the Mt. Pleasant baseball and softball teams are still right in the thick of the championship race. The Panthers head in to a string of nonconference games before picking up conference play next week, but no matter what happens, the Panthers will have a shot going into their last two SEC doubleheaders.
For the first time all season, the Panther baseball team is in first place. Mt. Pleasant moved in to first with a sweep of Ft. Madison on Monday, getting a little help from a Fairfield-Washington split out west.
Mt. Pleasant sits at 9-3 on the season. The Panthers swept Keokuk in four games this year. They went 3-1 against Ft. Madison and have split games against Washington and Fairfield. The Panthers will host the Demons on Thursday, June 27, and travel to Fairfield on Monday, July 1.
Fairfield sits in second place, at 7-3. They have six conference games left, two each against Ft. Madison, Keokuk and Mt. Pleasant. Fairfield is 8-4 with games against Keokuk and Mt. Pleasant upcoming.
Ft. Madison and Keokuk are out of the SEC race after a rough first half of the conference play. Ft. Madison was officially eliminated on Monday against Mt. Pleasant, currently sitting at 4-8. Keokuk is 0-10.
In softball, Fairfield is holding onto first place at 9-1. It’s a two-team race with Mt. Pleasant at 10-2. Washington is 5-5. Ft. Madison is 2-8, and Keokuk is 0-10. Note that Washington and Ft. Madison have only played twice in softball, despite playing four times in baseball. The Demons and Hounds will face off on Thursday, June 20.
Both the Mt. Pleasant baseball and softball teams are scheduled to play nonconference games tonight (Wednesday) at home. The Panther girls are set to play New London in a doubleheader beginning at 5:30 p.m. The baseball team is set to play Davis County at 7:30 p.m.
