Bryce Anderson is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther baseball team.
Anderson has risen to be one of Mt. Pleasant’s top players this season. He is hitting .263 at the plate and has had a great year on the mound, currently sitting on a .253 ERA.
Anderson met with The News on Thursday after practice. The questions are in bold with the answers following.
Did you grow up in Mt. Pleasant? Yes, I did.
How long have you been playing baseball? For about anywhere from 12-14 years, probably. When I was younger, my dad and I always used to go in the yard and hit the wiffle ball around and stuff like that. That’s where it started, and where I knew this was the sport for me.
Have you any plans for after high school? I will be attending Kirkwood to become a PTA (Physical Therapy Assistant). I’ll probably go for three years, even though Kirkwood is a community college. The PTA program is kind of a more intense program to where it takes more than 2 years to get it done.
Do you have plans to open up your own physical therapy place, or be in sports, or anything like that? I’m wanting to stay in sports for the most part, and go down that path.
What has it been like this year after losing so many starters? Losing those seniors was rough, but we’ve had some younger kids step up, definitely. Like Dalton Gardner and Chase Williamson and all them stepped up for us this year. I think we’re closer this year as a team. We’re more of a family. Kind of like a band of brothers. That makes us play a lot better.
Are you more nervous when you’re starting a game on the mound? My nerves definitely get the best of me, but after that first pitch it kind of just goes away. You just get out there and look in at the catcher. You just kind of relax and have fun, especially with a lead, you just go up there and throw.
Favorite MLB team? Definitely the Cardinals.
Do you have a favorite team to play against? Definitely Fairfield. Just because they’re a team that’s not very likable. They like to chirp, definitely. It’s definitely a rivalry there.
What is your take on bat flips? Honestly, if you’re a good player and you know that this ball is gone that you just hit, I wouldn’t make it anything special. Just drop the bat and run to first base. Jose Batista, when he did his, I think that’s too much. It ends up where the benches clear because of a bat flip. It’s just a bad deal.
Who’s the most competitive member of your team? I want to say Corbin (Broeker) definitely. He’s definitely a good ballplayer. He definitely likes to play the game. You can tell, because he’s just always there mentally and physically.
Does he get into it more than his dad does? Oh yeah. I think so.
If all your teammates were running for president, who would you vote for? Oh boy, that wouldn’t be a very good situation there. Probably Chase Lamm. He’s definitely got the smarts to be president. Very intelligent kid.
When you’re not at school or practice, what can we find you doing? Either with my friends relaxing or at work.
Where do you work at? Shottenkirk, detailing cars.
If you only could eat one food for the rest of your life, what would It be? I’m going to have to go with pizza.
What’s the topping? Definitely sausage. Sausage from Casey’s, that’s good stuff.
If you could hang out with one celebrity for a day, who would it be? I definitely like Adam Sander. He’s definitely a funny guy. I’ve been watching movies the last couple of nights and I was cracking up at his new one last night on NETFLIX.
What would you guys do? I’m taking him to the field to take some BP.
What if you could pick a superpower to have? I’d definitely like super strength. That would be awesome to just lift up anything.
You could hit the ball like 600 feet. Yeah! That would be awesome.
You’d have to take your own advice and not flip the bat or anything. You going to be able to do that? I’ll just snap it over my knee or something.
Favorite teacher? Definitely Broek (Brent Broeker). He’s just chill. He doesn’t really get on people’s butts about stuff, and he has a relaxed classroom. I can really relate to him because of being a baseball coach. It’s fun to be in his room, we usually talk about baseball and stuff like that.
Any shout outs? I just want to give a shout out to my mom. Just for always being there.
