NEW LONDON — After their weekend upset of Fairfield, the New London softball team has hit a bit of a rough patch. The Tigers have lost their last four games, including one each on Monday and Tuesday.
On Monday night, New London fell 10-0 on the road against Pekin. They hosted Cardinal on Tuesday night, dropping a nail-biter, 5-4.
On Monday, Pekin scored four runs in the third inning, three in the fourth and three more in the fifth. New London was held to just three hits all day.
Kara Krieger and Elly Manning both went 1-2 with a double in the loss. Layney Loyd was 1-2 with a single.
Chloe Heitmeier threw five innings in the loss, giving up 10 earned runs on 11 hits and two walks. She struck out two batters.
Tuesday’s game against Cardinal was back-and-forth all night long. Cardinal scored a run in the first inning but New London bounced back with two in the second. Cardinal tied it at 2-2 with a run in the fourth. New London scored two in the fifth, but Cardinal came right back with two in the sixth. The game went into extra innings tied 4-4 before the Comets scored the eventual game-winner in extra innings.
Krieger was the only Tiger with an RBI against Cardinal. She went 2-4 with a double and two RBIs. Alexa Wenger and Sofie Reighard each went 2-3. Marah Hartrick was 2-4 with a double, and Loyd went 2-4.
Heitmeier was in the circle again, and was stronger on Tuesday. She went all eight innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on 10 hits and one walk, while striking out four.
New London is now 7-7 overall. They’ll head to Central Lee for a SEISC South Division game on Thursday, June 13.
