FAIRFIELD — The Mt. Pleasant girls’ tennis team went 1-1 in Fairfield over the weekend in the Class 1A Region 4 team tournament. The Panthers took down Maharishi 5-3 on Saturday and lost 5-0 to Fairfield on Monday.
The Panthers took four of the six singles matches against Maharishi, including the top two matches. Erin Zihlman defeated Olivia Goodale 6-3, 2-6 and 10-6 in the No. 1 match, and Hallie Sandeen took out Yenet Tafesse 6-3, 6-2 in the No. 2 match.
The Panthers dropped the No. 3 and No. 4 matches. Shaleen Thiengmany fell 6-3, 5-7, 10-7 against Deepika Vempati in the No. 3 match, and Breeana Runyon dropped the No. 4 match 6-1 and 6-4 against Lily Fenton.
Mt. Pleasant won the No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches. Sierra Barton took down Vaisnavii Mohanraj 6-3 and 6-4, and Olivia Larson defeated Shristi Sharma 6-3 and 6-0.
Mt. Pleasant needed just one doubles win to end the showdown. Zihlman and Sandeen lost a tight one in the No. 1 match They were defeated by Goodale and Tafesse 6-3, 3-6, 10-7.
Barton and Larson finished things out with a win in the No. 3 double smatch. They defeated Mohanraj and Sharma 6-3 and 7-6 (7-4 tiebreaker) to give the Panthers their fifth win.
Thiengmany and Runyon were in their second set of No. 2 doubles when the meet finished. They had fallen 7-5 in their first set and led 2-1 in the second set.
On Monday, the Panthers played Fairfield in the regional quarterfinals. Mt. Pleasant was unable to pick up any wins.
Zihlman was swept 6-0, 6-0 against Yana Gaskell in the No. 1 singles match. Sandeen dropped her game 6-0, 6-0 against Anatta Charoenkul in the No. 2 match. Thiengmany fell 6-2 and 6-0 against Nellie Higdon in the No. 3 match. Runyon dropped the No. 4 match 6-4 and 6-11 against Abby Schaefer, and Barton lost 6-0 and 6-2 against Tess Paton in the No. 5 match.
Olivia Larson played in the No. 6 singles match. She fell 6-0 in the firs set but led 6-3 in the second when the meet was called due to Fairfield getting to five points.
Mt. Pleasant is back in Fairfield once again today (Wednesday). The Panthers will be competing in the girls’ regional individual and doubles tournaments.
