WINFIELD — The Winfield-Mt. Union girls’ basketball team hosted New London in a Henry County showdown on Saturday. The two teams played to a tie at halftime but a big third quarter from the Lady Wolves helped W-MU pick up their first win of the season, 51-43.

The two teams traded punches in the first two quarters. The first quarter ended at a 9-9 tie, and each team scored 13 in the second quarter to tie it again at 22-22 when the half ended.

W-MU jumped all over New London in the third quarter. The Wolves had their best offensive output, scoring 18, and held New London to six points to take a 40-28 lead into the fourth.

New London cut the lead to single digits with a 15-11 fourth quarter, but W-MU hung on for an eight-point win.

Jenna Buffington had huge game in the win, scoring 19 points and pulling down 19 rebounds, both of which led the game. Liana Sweezer scored 10 points and had the team’s only block.

Kyndal Townsley scored nine points in the game, and had five steals. Carlee Sloan had eight pionts and five steals. Jami Wilkerson finished the night with five points, seven steals and six assists.

New London was led by Kara Krieger, who scored 12 points in the loss. Layney Loyd had eight points. Alisha Boles went for seven points and 11 rebounds, and Marah Hartrick had seven points of her own.
