Letter to the editor: All life is precious

We are Christians who believe the Bible is the inerrant Word of God. This is the foundation on which we stand. So yes, we will be quoting Scripture. You may tell yourself that there is a separation between church and state in this country, so we do not have any right to use the Bible to speak on this issue, but “with no God, there is no reason to be moral. If God does not exist, then everything is permissible.” (Dostoevsky)

This is in response to the article in the Mt Pleasant news on Friday, May 24 titled “Banning abortion is another way to oppress women.” First, God is the author of ALL life. “Know that the Lord, He is God! It is He who made us, and we are His… (Psalm 100:3a)

We believe that life begins at conception. We believe that ALL life is precious no matter what that life looks like here on this earth. This world is not perfect, nor will it ever be. If the lack of a heartbeat means life is over and I am dead, shouldn’t the presence of a heartbeat mean that life has begun and I am alive? “To be weak, frail, vulnerable, and helpless does NOT reduce either your inherent worth or your ability to contribute meaningfully to the lives around you” (Magness).

We as sinful human beings are constantly trying to justify our sins. The top three reasons we justify the killing of a child in the womb is rape, incest, and the life of the mother. Abortion is the intentional killing of a child by dismemberment, or poisoning, or who knows what else. Only about 1 percent of abortions that happen in our world today occur for one of these three reasons. We use 1 percent to justify 100 percent of abortions. First, rape and incest are also sinful and violent, but we cannot heal violence with more violence. Society demands vengeance for this violence. Ironically, it is the innocent child who, through abortion receives a sentence of death. Abortion may serve the emotional needs of a society repelled by rape or incest, but it doesn’t serve the needs of the three human beings most affected—the mother, the father and their unborn child. No one chooses how they will be conceived. Is a life worth less if it was conceived in rape?

The third reason used is the health of the mother. Again, abortion is intentionally killing the baby. Deliver the baby, do everything that you possibly can. Sometimes in the process of saving the mother, the baby will not survive, but that is different than dismembering the child on purpose. “Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.” (Isaiah 5:20) “For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but have itching ears. They will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

You can call abortion a choice, a right, but it doesn’t change the fact it is a sin. All sin is wrong, and all sin brings the judgment of death. Abortion is not any greater sin than my own. The most important point is YES abortion is forgivable! It is a sin Christ died for and paid the price for on the cross. If the value of human life is to have any meaning, then its value CANNOT depend on, or be diminished by the circumstances that brought about that life.
