It wasn’t Black Friday, but people were lined up outside just the same for the grand opening of Gordmans in Mt. Pleasant on Wednesday, March 20, at 5:30 p.m.

“This has to be the most talked about opening in Mt. Pleasant in forever,” said Kristi Ray, executive vice president of the Mt. Pleasant Area Chamber Alliance.

Gordmans is at 700 North Grand Avenue in Mt. Pleasant where Peebles used to stand. The grand opening of Gordmans in Mt. Pleasant is one of 38 new stores opening in March across the country.

The grand opening of Gordmans in Mt. Pleasant is the fifth grand opening Liz Platt, district manager, has attended in March.

“This is the largest turnout with over 325 people waiting in line,” Platt said. “The (lower priced) strategy we have is something we want to bring into small-town communities. We’re so glad to be a part of this community.”

The first 100 guests lined up at Gordmans for the grand opening received a free gift and the chance to win a $50 gift card. During the grand opening, Gordmans donated $1,000 to Mt. Pleasant Community High School. Associate principal Michael Wilson accepted the giant check.

Ray said when the Chamber heard Peebles was closing, they were very said; however, most Peebles employees were able to stay with the store as it reopened as Gordmans. Ray said it was a “wonderful addition” and an “upgrade” to Mt. Pleasant.

“If I could have a nickel for every time I heard ‘Mt. Pleasant has a Gordmans?’” Ray said with a smile.

Crystal Mortimer, store manager, said she was excited to show shoppers what Gordmans is all about. Mortimer, who also worked for Peebles, said there’s a lot more stuff in Gordmans.

“So much more home stuff,” Mortimer said. “We’ve got more discounted clothes. It’s awesome.”

Maggie Hawkins, Gordmans store associate who was previously with Peebles, said getting the new store ready was a lot of work but it was worth it.

“Each one of our associates has put a little bit of their own blood, sweat and tears here,” Hawkins said.

Steve Engberg, with the Mt. Pleasant city council, said Gordmans opening in Mt. Pleasant is fantastic.

“I know Gordmans is fantastic because my wife told me,” he said with a laugh. “If you shop local, local stays. It’s up to us to keep these stores here.”

Debra Lamm, of Mt. Pleasant, shopped at Gordmans on Wednesday. Lamm said she loved Peebles and wanted to see what Gordmans was all about. Lamm was looking forward to shopping at Gordmans for the athletic brand clothing, children’s clothes and just more women’s clothing options in general, she said.

Linda Salazar, of Mt. Pleasant, said Mt. Pleasant needs more shopping opportunities. (Gordmans) has good brands, cheap prices. We like it,” Salazar said.

Adilene Gonzalez, of Mt. Pleasant, knew she loved the Gordmans in Iowa City, but she didn’t like the drive.

“All the stores over there are really far away,” Gonzalez said. “I’m happy and excited there’s a Gordmans’s here. We need more stores like this.”

Gordmans is open Mondays through Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.
