W-MU speech competes at state level

On Saturday, March 9, seven WMU Speech Team members competed at the Iowa High School Speech Association State competition at North Scott high school in Eldridge. Students perform individual events there and are judged and rated by a panel of three judges. Each event has its own criteria to judge, and all students are competing for a Division I (Superior) rating.

WMU’s team was led on Saturday by a quartet of senior ladies. All four of the seniors qualified both of their individual events for state competition and received unanimous division I ratings from all three of their judges. The seniors included Hailey Allbaugh (Prose and Storytelling), Madison Brady (Musical Theater and Poetry), Mollie Hinkle (Musical Theater and Poetry), and Liana Sweezer (Prose and Storytelling).

The team’s underclassmen also had very strong showings at the state level. Freshman Griffin Humphreys, also a double qualifier for the state competition received Division II scores (Excellent) on his events (Movie Review and Radio News Announcing). Dakota Silva performed her Prose selection and received a Division II rating. Sophomore Dane Sweezer’s After Dinner Speaking performance also netted a Division II rating.
