Your Friend on the Front Page

Phil Kenney

Every week, the Mt. Pleasant News will feature a Henry County resident in a profile snapshot. The questions will appear in bold.

This week?s ?Friend on the Front Page? is Phil Kenney, who is the guidance counselor at Mt. Pleasant High School.

Are you originally from Mt. Pleasant/Henry County? If not, what brought you here? No, I?m from Iowa City. After I completed graduate school I interviewed here. It was my first gig out of school. This is my fourth year working at Mt. Pleasant.

What is your favorite local hangout? I spend a lot of time at East Lake Park and Oakland Mills. I play a lot of disc golf.

What do you like to do in your free time? I like being outside. During the summer and on breaks I like traveling to different places and just being outside and being active.

Is there an annual event in Mt. Pleasant/Henry County that you enjoy? Being a track coach, I have to say we run a really nice operation. Our staff and volunteers run the meets well and I always look forward to the home track meets we host.

Is there something Mt. Pleasant doesn?t have that you?d like to see? A good BBQ spot.

What is your favorite wintertime activity? Sledding.

What do you think is Mt. Pleasant/Henry County?s trademark? People think of Old Threshers because it brings lots of people to town. But I always think of Mt. Pleasant as a tight-knit group. No matter where you go you always see someone you know.

What?s one dish or drink that reminds you of Mt. Pleasant? Wings at Keo?s.

Tell us something interesting about you? I was a Drake Relay champion. I ran a medley and was actually a record holder for a time ? about 10 years.
