Yarmouth man arrested for weapons trafficking

A Yarmouth man has been arrested and charged with trafficking stolen weapons.

Casey Ray Banwart, 19, of Yarmouth, was arrested and charged with trafficking stolen weapons on Tuesday, March 6, following an investigation.

In December, a Des Moines County resident turned over a firearm to the Des Moines County Sheriff?s Office. The weapon, a .22 revolver, had been found in possession of her son. The firearm was determined to be one of the guns stolen from a cabin on O?Connell Beach Road on Dec. 6, 2017.

Sheriff?s Deputies conducted witness interviews and determined that Banwart had purchased the firearm and another stolen firearm, knowing the firearms had been stolen. Banwart transferred possession of the stolen firearm to multiple subjects following the purchase of the gun.

On Feb. 1, 2018, the Des Moines County Deputies executed a search warrant on the vehicle and home of Banwart. Deputies located ammunition that is consistent with both of the stolen firearms purchased by Banwart.

An arrest warrant for the charge of trafficking stolen weapons, a Class D felony, was obtained on March 6, and Banwart was taken into custody for this warrant.

A criminal charge is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent until or unless proven guilty.
