Both Winfield-Mt. Union and New London passed their first test of the 2018 postseason on Monday night. The Wolves shut out Iowa Valley 2-0 on their home field, and The Tigers ran over English Valleys 11-1 in New London.
W-MU had to sweat a little in their low-scoring game. The only runs came in the bottom of the third when Molly Miller brought home two RBIs to give the Wolves the lead. W-MU would never tack on but Iowa Valley had all sorts of trouble on offense.
W-MU collected six hits on the night. Carlee Sloan was 1-3 with a run scored. Emme Haines went 1-3 with a run scored. Jobey Malone went 1-3 with a double, and Maci Richardson, Madie Anderson and Dakota Haines all went 1-3 with a single.
Anderson cruised in the circle for W-MU. She threw a three-hit shutout, giving up just three hits and one walk, while striking out 17 batters in the win.
In New London, it was all Tigers on both offense and defense. New London scored a run in the first inning, five in the third and four in the fourth to take a 10-run lead. English Valleys exted the game with one in the top of the fifth, but New London closed things out with a run in the bottom half of the fifth.
Layney Loyd played long ball for New London. She went 3-4 with a homer, two RBIs and two runs scored. Sydni Coleman was 3-3 with two runs scored. Kara Krieger went 2-3 with two runs scored.
Marah Hartrick and Alexa Wenger brought in three runs apiece in the win. Hartrick was 2-2 with three RBIs and a run scored, and Wenger went 2-3 with three RBIs and a run scored. Carson McSorley was 1-3 with a double, a run and two RBIs of her own.
Camryn Blint picked up the complete-game win in the circle. She threw all five innings and gave up just one earned run on four hits and two walks, while striking out eight batters to pick up the win.
