OTTUMWA ? The Ottumwa defense kept the Mt. Pleasant girls bottled up for one half of Thursday?s non-conference game, but the Bulldogs couldn?t keep Mary West and the Panthers down long.

West scored a second-half hat trick, leading the Panthers back to top Ottumwa 3-1 on the road.

Ottumwa caught Panther keeper Ayden Ross off guard early, scoring in the second minute off the foot of Joselyn York. The two teams went scoreless for the next 38 minutes and the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead into halftime.

Ross made a big save on a breakaway by York early in the second half, and that helped spark the Panther run. The Panther offense finally got on the board when West scored in the 46th minute, tying the game up at 1-1.

West put the Panthers in the lead 15 minutes later. She scored on a breakaway with 21 minutes left in the half, giving Mt. Pleasant a 2-1 advantage.

Later in the second half, West buried the dagger, scoring in the bottom corner to make it 3-1 and put the game on ice.

Ross had five saves in the win for Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers moved to 2-0 and will next play at Fairfield on Monday, April 9, at 7 p.m.
