WAYLAND ? Both WACO basketball teams put up a strong fight on Tuesday night against Danville. The boys? team lost a nail-biter 74-70, and the girls? team fell 49-39.
The boys hung close with the Bears throughout the first half. Conner Eichelberger scored nine points in the opening period. The Warriors led 14-12 after one quarter and trailed by just one point, at 32-31, at the half.
Danville began to pull away in the third quarter, stretching the lead to 52-40 before the third quarter buzzer. WACO was able to inch back in the final period but ran out of time in a 10-point loss.
Drew Kissell had a big game, scoring 19 points on 8-13 shooting and 2-4 from down town. He also dished out five assists. Colton Horak had 13 points, eight rebounds and six assists, and Eichelberger finished with 13 points.
Beau Beckler had eight points in the loss. Calvin Battle scored seven. Nik Coble had five points and 10 rebounds. Braden Hammond scored three points and Matthew Leichty scored two.
The WACO girls trailed 14-9 after the first quarter and 29-21 at halftime. The Bears stretched their lead to 43-31 after three quarters and hung on to a double-digit lead throughout the fourth quarter, eventually topping the Warriors by 10.
Kiana Miller scored 16 points in the loss, 12 of which came in the second half. Laney Graber and Kristen Conley had eight points each. Nadiyah Brown scored three points and the duo of Ashleigh Hallett and Aubri Garnsey scored two points each.
