WEST BRANCH ? The 2018 volleyball season opened up on Saturday for Winfield-Mt. Union. The Wolves went 2-2 at the West Branch touchament, defeating Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont, 2-1, and Lone Tree, 2-0, while falling 2-0 to West Branch and Don Bosco.
In their first pool play game, W-MU scored a comeback victory over EBF. After dropping the first set 21-16, the Wolves came back with a 21-17 win in the second set and 15-12 in the tiebreaking third. Jenna Buffington led the team with eight kills in the win. Kayla Edwards added nine assists.
The Wolves dropped the second pool play game 21-11 and 21-6 to hosting West Branch. W-MU only had four kills in the loss, two of which came from Liana Sweezer.
The Wolves dominated Lone Tree to get into the semifinals. W-MU took down the Lions 21-8 and 21-14 behind six kills by Madie Anderson and five from Buffington. Kaya Edwards had 13 assists in the win.
The Wolves played Don Bosco in the tournament semifinals. Don Bosco took games 25-11 and 25-21. Buffington led the way with six kills. Edwards had seven assists, and Kyndal Townsley led the team with nine digs.
W-MU will host their first home game on Thursday, Aug. 30. The Wolves will take on SEISC North Division rival Pekin.
