WINFIELD ? The Winfield-Mt. Union and New London golf teams are just one good outing away from a state berth. The Wolves and Tigers finished one-two at the Winfield 1A sectional tournament on Saturday, advancing both schools to the District meet.
The two schools entered the sectional tournament needing to place top three to advance. W-MU won the meet with a final stroke total of 323. New London scored a 335 for second. Danville was the third team advancing, shooting a 368.
W-MU was led by two scores under 80. Kaleb Hagge won medalist honors, shooting a 74. He shot a 39 in his first round and a 35 in his second. Nolan Ross shot a 41 and a 37 to wind up at 78th, which was third-place overall.
Kash Rossiter finished the day at 85, shooting a 41 on his first nine and a 44 on the second nine. That put him in a tie for fourth-place overall, giving the Wolves three of the top five scores.
Jarod Kadel was the fourth Panther scorer, shooting a 41 and a 45 to finish at 86. Graham Hagge shot a 45 and a 43 to end up at 88, and Noah Freeman shot a 54 and a 50 to score 104.
New London was led by second-place finisher Clayton Phillips. Phillips shot a 36 on his front nine and a 39 on his second nine to wind up at 75. Justin Carter gave the Tigers two top-five finishers, shooting a 44 and a 41 to finish out at 85, which tied him for fourth.
Gavin Prottsman finished the day at 86, shooting a 43 in both rounds to get there. Javis Krieger and Gabe Carter each shot a 94. Krieger shot 48 on his first nine and 46 on his second nine, and Carter shot a 47 in both rounds.
The Wolves and Tigers will play their district tournament at Pleasant Valley in Iowa City on Thursday, May 17. That meet will begin at 9 a.m.
