FAIRFIELD ? The New London softball team went 1-2 in the Fairfield Invitational tournament this weekend. The Tigers lost 9-5 to Clear Creek-Amana on Friday, fell 5-3 against Wilton on Saturday and then knocked off Chariton 9-0 on Saturday.
Layney Loyd went deep in the Tigers? first game of the weekend. Loyd finished 2-3 with a home run, two RBIs and two runs scored in the Tigers? loss to CCA. Camryn Blint went 3-3 with two runs scored. Kara Krieger was 2-2 with one RBI and Breanna Mettler was 1-3 with a double, two RBIs and one run scored.
Sydni Coleman took the loss, throwing five innings and giving up six earned runs on eight hits and two walks, while striking out three batters. Camryn Blint went 3-3 with a walk and three earned runs.
Loyd stayed hot on Saturday against Wilton, going 3-3 with one RBI. Carson McSorley went 2-4 with two runs scored and a stolen base. Blint and Mettler each knocked home one run in the loss.
Blint and Coleman threw three innings apiece. Blint took the loss, giving up three earned runs on six hits and no walks, while striking out two batters. Coleman gave up two earned runs on four hits and no walks.
Chloe Heitmeier had a dominant outing against Chariton, throwing five shutout innings and giving up just five hits and one walk, while striking out five batters.
Marah Hartrick went 2-2 with two RBIs. Ashlyn McSorley, an eighth-grader, went 2-3 with two RBIs. Mettler was 1-3 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Loyd was 2-3 with a double. C. McSorley went 2-4 with an RBI, an run scored and a stolen base. Kaylor Schulte was 1-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
The New London softball team will be back at home tonight for a Southeast Iowa Super Conference crossover game with Pekin. That contest will begin at 7 p.m.
