DES MOINES ? All seven of Henry County?s state qualifying wrestlers were in action on Thursday as the state tournament got underway in Des Moines. There were plenty of highs and lows but when the dust settled, six of the county?s matmen moved on to day two and three are still in contention for a state championship.

Both Mt. Pleasant wrestlers competed in the afternoon session. Corbin Broeker was first up, at 106 lbs.

Broeker fell to sixth-ranked Devin Harmison of Southeast Polk in the first round, losing by pin fall in 52 seconds. Broeker bounced right back, however, and took down Aime Mukiza of Des Moines North-Hoover with a pin fall of his own, winning the match in 3:26. Broeker can still get as high as third place if he wins out. He will wrestle today (Friday) against the loser of a match between No. 1 Cullen Schriever, of Mason City, and No. 5 Aiden Evans, of Bettendorf.

Nate Wallace had a tough bracket at 145 lbs. He took on two wrestlers ranked in the top eight, falling in both matches.

Wallace took on No. 5 Damond Lockner, of Ft. Dodge, in the first round. Lockner pinned Wallace in 4:22. Wallace faced No. 8 Collin Lewis of North Scott in his first wrestleback. Lewis pinned Wallace in 57 seconds to eliminate him from the tournament.

Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union went 2-0 in the opening round. No. 1 Jarod Kadel won by a 9-0 major decision against Cedar Point-Urbana?s Cole Whitehead, and Cam Rice took down Winterset?s Kruise Kiburz 3-0.

Both Columbus/W-MU wrestlers have already wrestled this morning as of press time. Kadel topped No. 6 Jacob Mielke of Pocahontas Area, 8-4, in the quarterfinals and will take on Bondurant-Farrar?s Colby Lillegard in the semifinals. Lillegard is currently ranked No. 5 at 106 lbs.

Rice was knocked off the winner?s bracket by No. 5 Tanner Probasco of South Tama. He will take on Reed Abbas of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows, in the wrestlebacks.

New London?s Samuel Loyd, ranked fifth at Class 1A 132 lbs., pinned Don Bosco?s Max Wettengel in 5:54. He will face ninth-ranked Nate Monahan, of Woodbury Central, in the next round.

Javis Krieger fell to Mitchell Paca, of Sibley-Ocheyedan, in overtime, falling in the first sudden victory period, 7-3. He took on sixth-ranked Connor Lange of Missouri Valley in the wrestlebacks, went to sudden victory again and moved on with a 6-4 victory. Krieger will take on the loser of No. 3 Kolton Roth (GTRA) vs. No. 9 Michael Egan (MFL MAR MAC), a matchup that will take place later today (Friday).

WACO?s eighth-ranked heavyweight Cody Crawford took on No. 2 Enrique Maravilla of Manson Northwest Webster, in the first round. He fell by pinfall in 3:07.

Crawford took down Montezuma?s Grant Battreall in his first wrestleback. He will face either No. 7 Darlyn Marquez of West Sioux or No. 1 Brian Sadler of Jesup in his next match.
