SEC races hotter than ever

By Andy Krutsinger, Mt. Pleasant News

The Southeast Conference season is heading down the homestretch and still there is no clear winner in either sport. Fairfield still holds the one-game advantage on the baseball fields but the softball standings are tighter than ever.

The Trojans are 10-2 in baseball after splitting with Washington this season. Fairfield leads both Mt. Pleasant and Washington by one game, as the Panthers and Demons both sit at 9-3 heading into the final four games.

Mt. Pleasant has the toughest schedule of the three schools, as they will have to play games against both schools. The Panthers travel to Washington on Thursday, June 28, and host Fairfield on Monday, July 2.

Ft. Madison and Keokuk bring up the rear in the SEC baseball standings. The Bloodhounds sit at 2-10, with their only wins coming against Keokuk. The Chiefs are still winless, at 0-12.

The softball championship is still anyone?s to win. With just four games left in the SEC schedule, every single team has a chance to win the conference. At the same time, every team has a chance to be dead last.

Keokuk has shuffled to the front of the pack after sweeping Washington on Monday. They are at 7-5 with games against Fairfield and Ft. Madison still remaining.

Fairfield, Mt. Pleasant and Washington are all tied for second place at 6-6. The Trojans had the lead before getting swept on Monday in Ft. Madison.

Ft. Madison is sitting in last with a 5-7 record, but that still puts the Bloodhounds just two games out of first place and one game behind all three teams who are currently tied in second.

Ft. Madison has games against Keokuk and Washington remaining. Despite being last, they may be the hottest team in the SEC, as they?ve won four of their last six games.

Barring inclimate weather, the conference race will finally be decided early next week. The final games on the conference schedule are set for Tuesday, July 3.

Listed below are the conference standings for both sports, as well as the schedule for the final week of SEC play.
