PELLA ? The No. 1 Mt. Pleasant basketball team bolstered their resume one last time, winning their regular season finale on Tuesday night in Pella. The Panthers topped the Dutch 72-62 to finish season 18-2.
The teams split the first quarter 15-15 but Mt. Pleasant scored 22 points in the second quarter and led 37-31 at halftime. The Panthers stretched their lead by one point at 49-42 after three quarters and outscored the Dutch 72-62 in the final period.
Brady Sartorius had yet another huge night offensively, scoring 30 points on 10-18 shooting and leading the squad with four assists. Jordan Magnani scored 14 points of his own, and the two starting guards were a combined 14-14 from the free throw line.
Kieran Kohorst had 11 points in the win and led the team with five rebounds. Rhett Zeglen and Jonathan Ita scored six points each and Colin Mulford ended the day with five points.
The win gives the Panthers seven in a row heading into the postseason. Two of their three regular season losses came against Class 4A teams Dubuque Hempstead and Cedar Rapids Washington, and the other came in their first game against Cedar Rapids Xavier, which is tied with Mt. Pleasant for the No. 1 ranking according to the latest AP rankings.
Mt. Pleasant will open their district tournament on Monday, February 19, at 7:30 p.m. Ft. Madison and Iowa City Liberty will play on the other side of the top bracket at 6 p.m. with the winners playing two days later. All of those games will take place in Mt. Pleasant.
Whoever comes out of the top half will take on Solon, Keokuk, Fairfield or Washington at Muscatine High School on Monday, February 26, for a shot at the state tournament.
