Panther Profile: Payton Kelly

By Andy Krutsinger, Mt. Pleasant News

Payton Kelly is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther boys? soccer team.

Kelly, a mid-fielder, was one of three Mt. Pleasant players with over 20 points last season, scoring eight goals and dishing out six assists.

Kelly met with The News before practice on Wednesday. The questions will appear in bold with his answers following.

Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? Actually, I grew up in Mediapolis, and I moved here when I was in sixth grade.

How long have you been playing soccer? I started my eighth-grade year. I really wish I would have started sooner, but what can you do? I have played all four years of high school and I?ve loved every minute of it.

What got you in to it? Tanner Ruby. He was on my eighth-grade team, and I told him, ?if I score one goal this year, I?ll play in high school.? Sure enough I scored only one goal. So then I played freshman year and I loved it.

Have you made plans for after high school? Yeah, I?m actually moving to Pennsylvania (to attend) State College. My brother lives out there so I am moving closer to him. I?m going to a two year school for graphic design.

Have you been to the east coast a lot? A couple times, just visiting him. I?ve never been to like, New York or anything but I plan on going when I?m out there. I?ll only be a couple hours from New York and Washington D.C.

What is your favorite soccer memory? Probably last year versus Washington. I took a penalty as time expired and won the game. That has to be my favorite soccer memory.

Do you have any superstitions? I always say a prayer when we?re walking out. That would probably be my one superstition. I (also) listen to a certain song before every game.

Which one? It?s called, ?You can?t stop me,? and it kind of just gets me in that mind set.

Are you a cold weather player or a warm weather player? Probably a cold weather player. I like it when it?s overcast. I feel like I play better?that?s probably another superstition.

How much do you talk on the field, to the other team? It depends if they start talking first. I usually just try to tell them to shut up and play, but sometimes they get a little chipper. Just depends on who we?re playing.

Is there anyone on the team who probably talks too much? Not really, I mean?I don?t want to say any names (laughing).

Do you have any goal celebrations in your mind for this season? Not really in particular. Just kind of run and jump into my teammates? arms but?I?ll have to plan a couple.

In some of the other sports, you?re one of the main guys in the student section. Do you consider yourself the captain of the student section or is there somebody else? For football it was Cooper (Huckabone) and I. We definitely led the student section. For basketball it was just a bunch of senior guys. There wasn?t really one leader.

What?s your favorite theme night that you guys do? I like U.S.A. night. It?s always a good one. Everyone always shows their pride in America. Especially on Veterans Night, that was really special.

If you were running for president and had to pick one of your teammates to be your running mate, who would you choose? Probably Cade Warner, just because we get a long well and I feel like he could help me run the country I guess. (Laughing) He works hard, so I?d want that.

Do you have any irrational fears? Fear of clowns.

Is that one from when you were a little kid. Something you just developed? Yeah, when I was a little kid. Probably from watching ?It? at too young of an age, and going to haunted houses.

So did you watch the new ?It? when it came out? I did! It?s actually a really good movie! I really enjoyed it.

If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? It would have to be Will Smith, just because he seems to love life. I love him. Fresh Prince of Bel Air is my favorite TV show, and he?s just iconic.

What would you guys do? I don?t know, just hang out. I?d probably ask him what he does on a daily basis?we?d probably go like, skydiving. I?ve always wanted to go skydiving, so skydiving with Will Smith would be a fun day.

What if you could pick a superpower to have for the rest of your life? Probably the ability to read minds, just because you could either prevent or know what people are thinking. It could be a dangerous one to have.

Who is your favorite teacher? That?s a tough one. It?s either Mrs. Kohorst or Mrs. Moore. They both are just great teachers and overall pretty chill and don?t really get too angry. Mrs. Kohorst is always fun. She always tells crazy stories and entertains us.

Do you have any shout outs? You can shout out anybody in the world. I?ll probably shout out my mom.
