Elijah Plooster is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther boys? tennis team.
Plooster is the No. 4 singles player for Mt. Pleasant and part of the No. 3 doubles team alongside Donny Arledge. He and the rest of the Panthers will be in Pella this Saturday, May 19, for the substate final.
Plooster met with The News on Wednesday before practice. The questions are in bold with his answers following.
Did you grow up in Mt. Pleasant? Sort of. I (went here) my first and second grade year and then came back before high school.
Where did you move from? I lived in South Dakota for a while.
How long have you been playing tennis? This is my third year.
So you didn?t play as a freshman then? No, I should have. It would?ve given me a lot better practice.
Why did you end up going out? It was actually Ethan Weber, our number one. He wanted to go out and I wanted to go out with him, so we had this little pact.
Do you know what you?re doing after high school? I don?t exactly know for sure. I plan on going to SCC for a year or two, but other than that I have no plans.
In your time at Mt. Pleasant, do you have a favorite tennis memory? That?s a tough one. I really enjoyed playing with Ben (Zihlman) and Ethan (Weber). It?s really fun playing against them in doubles, because Ethan is so positive and Ben is just such a dork and such a nice guy.
Are you a bigger fan of singles matches or doubles matches? I like playing singles because it?s a one-on-one, head-to-head, but in doubles I can be aggressive. I can get in there and have a good time, and if I?m not doing so hot I?ve got a partner to defend on. He never lets me down.
Do you get nervous before a meet, pumped up for a meet or do you just kind of stay cool? Oh, I take a nap. I sleep. These guys can all vouch; I have the weirdest sleeping position on the rides.
You?re pretty chill on the court. How often do you play someone who is a little over-competitive and maybe angry? There?s one or two, maybe three. Not very many. Most guys know how to keep their heads level. I remember there was one guy who just got upset at every call I made, and it was the funniest thing ever.
When you play certain teams and match up with certain guys do you know which ones are no fun to play against? Oh yeah! Completely? You understand what teams are going to be a little angrier than the others. I guess that?s all strategy. You could use that against them. It?s fuel.
If you were running for president and had to pick a teammate to be your running mate, who would you choose? I?d choose Ethan Weber. He seems to know what he?s doing and?he?ll sway me to his side of the argument. It?d probably work.
You against Coach Rodgers one-on-one, what is the final score? The final score would probably be six-eight, him.
He?d beat you by two? Probably, yeah. Either that or we?d go into tiebreak and then I might beat him.
Favorite movie or TV show? My favorite movie would probably be ?The Greatest Showman.? That one had me good. It was a real heart-wrenching movie for me.
Are you a musicals type of guy? Not really! I like more 80?s sort of movies that portrait the past, and I just happened to really enjoy that movie.
What is your favorite thing to do outside of school or practice? I like to roller skate. I?m a roller-blader. Either that or?we don?t have an orchestra at the high school, but I used to dabble in the cello a little bit. I love playing the cello, and plan on picking that up when I graduate.
If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? That?s a solid question. I?d say either Hugh Jackman or Ryan Reynolds. Those both seem like really chill guys to hang out with.
Isn?t Hugh Jackman in ?The Greatest Showman?? Yeah! Well, he?s also ?Logan? so that?s a big takeover for me. My nerd side comes out from the X-Men.
What would you guys do? We?d probably just chill. Kick back and watch a movie or two, nothing too crazy. Maybe throw a football around or something.
What if you could have a super power to have? I guess I?m very stereotypical, I like flight. Flight would be kind of cool.
It would be convenient, right? Yeah! Like, ?Oh shoot, I?m running late.? Whoosh!
Who?s your favorite teacher? Ronnie Waggoner. Mr. Waggoner has been there for me since my freshman year. I?d say he?s by far one of my favorites.
Do you have any shout outs?
You can shout out anybody in the world. My mom, Kari Smith. Her birthday is going to be on graduation, so happy birthday mom.
