Panther Profile: Dani Broeker

By Andy Krutsinger, Mt. Pleasant News

Dani Broeker is a senior at Mt. Pleasant High School and a member of the Panther volleyball team.

Broeker is also a member of the Panther softball and track and field teams. She was recently crowned homecoming queen this fall.

The Panther libero met with The News on Tuesday before practice. The questions appear in bold with her answers following.

Did you grow up here in Mt. Pleasant? Yes, I did.

How long have you been playing volleyball? Since seventh grade, but I did a few camps before that.

Have you made plans for after high school? I know what I want to do. I want to go into Elementary Education, but I am undecided on where I want to go. It will depend on if I actually end up playing volleyball in college. If that?s so, I?ll go to a community college but if not I will either go to Iowa or UNI, most likely.

What is your favorite memory in all your years playing volleyball? That?s a hard one. Last Thursday wasn?t really a big game, or it didn?t matter for anything, but for us it meant a lot. Everyone was saying how good (Liberty) was and we just went in there and I think we played our best game of the season. It was the most exciting game of our lives and it was really fun and memorable.

When you go on these serving streaks, is that mostly serving at one particular player? If one girl is struggling, then definitely. Otherwise, most of the time you just try not to hit the libero because she?s going to be your best. I just try and hit the spots coach gets me and hope it gets there.

As a libero, when you are diving and rolling, are you just covered with bruises or get score before the later sets? I usually don?t feel it until the next day. I?ll have scrapes on my fingers or on my knees. But as I?m going into it, I honestly don?t remember diving or how I do it. I just kind of go into it and then I wake up and I?m like, ?I wonder where that?s from!?

Are there ever times where you get up from a dive and think, ?Wow I?m actually pretty achy from that fall?? Yeah, sometimes if I hit more of my upper body than my lower body, it will kind of knock the wind out of me a little bit.

Coach Streeter gets 10 spikes right at you, perfectly set. How many do you successfully dig? Oh man, with Coach Streeter all of them! (Laughing) No, I?m just kidding. I?ll give myself the benefit of the doubt and say six.

What was your favorite part of homecoming week: Winning queen, the boys winning the football game or you seniors winning the Powderpuff game? Probably Powderpuff, just because it?s a really fun thing to get to do. We were all really excited and were like, ?I wish we could do a full game instead of a half!? It?s just really fun and something different that we get to do.

If there was a Powderpuff league, would you play? Oh definitely. Coach probably wouldn?t let us, but I would sure try!

I?ve got one more Powderpuff question. Tell me about the trick play you guys tried (pretending you had the wrong ball and then taking off running). So, Coach (Rocco) Russo had told me he had this trick play for me. He was telling me about it, and I was like ?I don?t really think this is going to work. How are they going to believe this?? I went and watched it on Youtube and it worked almost every time. I was actually really nervous, because I was like, ?If I don?t act right, it?s going to be obvious that I?m faking and they?re just going to come get me.? It was actually supposed to be the first play of the game but we had heard the other team knew about it, so we moved it back and it just didn?t go as well.

Do you have any nicknames? Not really on the volleyball court. My grandpa calls me ?Daisy Mae.? A lot of people call me, ?Chubbs,? not in like an ?I?m chubby? kind of way, but it?s just a cute little person. I don?t really know! (Laughing)

When you are not at school or practice, what can you be found doing? Either at home with my family, I guess. Or just running around to the stores, shopping with friends. Helping mom with photography stuff.

We ask this to everyone. If you could spend the day with one celebrity, who would you choose? Let?s do Adam Sandler. I feel like that would be a really funny day.

What would you guys do? Probably just watch some of his movies.

Do you have any favorite movies of his? I don?t know if it?s my favorite anymore but, when my brother and I were younger, we watched Waterboy every day. We could recite the entire movie.

What if you could have a superpower? Probably be able to fly because I?ve always been shorter than everyone, so it would be kind of cool to be overtop everyone for once.

Would you fly anywhere exotic? Because at that point, you?re pretty much limitless. I guess so, at that point I could go anywhere. I?d probably fly and touch the tip of the Eifel Tower.

Who is your favorite teacher? That?s a hard one. I would probably say Mrs. Anderson, just because she?s very calm and relaxed. She really gets how crazy high school and the student athlete part of things are. She?s very coordinating to us and she helps us out a lot.

Do you have any shout outs? You can shout out anyone in the whole world. Anyone in the whole world? I guess my family in Riverside. My grandparents.
