Panther boys named No. 1 in AP poll

The Mt. Pleasant basketball games against Ottumwa may have been postponed on Monday night, but that doesn?t mean Panther fans don?t have a reason to celebrate on Tuesday.

The Panthers were ranked number one in Class 3A when the new Associated Press rankings came out on Monday. It was the second of three major Iowa prep polls to rank MPCHS in the top spot.

Mt. Pleasant was tabbed at number one by IowaPreps.com over the weekend. IowaPreps.com has Oskaloosa in at No. 2 and Cedar Rapids Xavier behind them in the No. 3 spot. The AP has Xavier and Oskaloosa in a tie for the second spot.

The Gazette Poll still has Xavier ranked ahead of Mt. Pleasant. The Saints outlasted the Panthers 68-62 in the season opener in Mt. Pleasant back in late November.

The Panthers are currently sitting at 15-3 with their two other losses coming against ranked opponents.

Another notable team in the Class 3A rankings is Charles City. The Comets, who lost to Mt. Pleasant in Cedar Rapids during the Wells Fargo Advisors Shootout in January, sits at No. 6 in The Gazette and IowaPreps polls but No. 7 in the AP poll.

The Panthers have just two more games left on their regular season schedule before they begin a postseason run that Panther fans hope ends at the state tournament.

Mt. Pleasant will face Washington on the road on Friday, Feb. 9. The Panthers will then close out the year in Pella on Tuesday, Feb. 13.
