NEW LONDON ? There aren?t many teams in Iowa as red hot as the New London baseball team. The Tigers won their 13th game in a row on Thursday night, shutting down Central Lee 3-0 to finish the regular season at a scolding 20-2.
The Tigers went 20-1 after losing their home opener, and haven?t lost a conference game since.
New London grabbed the lead early. Isaac McSorley led the game off with a single and Sam Loyd brought him home with a sacrifice fly two batters later.
The game stayed 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth. Shae Summerfield had the hit of the night, blasting a solo homerun to left-center field, which brought the Tiger lead to 2-0.
Loyd scored the third and final run in the sixth. He reached with a single and came around to score on an error.
New London scattered six hits throughout the night. Loyd was 1-2 with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base. McSorley went 1-3 with a run and two stolen bases, and Summerfield finished 1-3 with a homer, an RBI and a run scored.
Mason Porter went 1-3 with a stolen base in the win. Darius Whaley and Keontae Luckett each finished the game 1-3.
Britt Noel picked up the win on the mound, throwing five hitless innings and giving up just two walks, while striking out three batters over his five innings of work. Sam Loyd added a couple of shutout innings of his own, giving up just one hit in the process.
The Tigers will now hit postseason play. New London will play on Tuesday, July 10, against either Danville or Winfield-Mt. Union. Those two teams will play on Saturday, July 7 for a shot at the Tigers.
