The New London softball team had a rough outing on Friday night, falling 8-1 to Wapello at home. The Tigers bounced back the very next day, however, winning the West Liberty tournament with a 13-1 victory over Mediapolis and a 5-2 win over West Liberty.
The Tigers and Arrows played almost evenly through the first four innings. The Arrows held a 2-1 lead, scoring one run in the first inning and one in the third, but a Tiger score in the bottom of the third kept New London close.
The top of the fifth was disasterous for the Tigers, however. Wapello loaded the bases with one out and a couple of shaky plays from the New London defense led to six-straight runs, which helped the Arrows blow the game open.
?Too many mental mistakes,? Tiger coach Duane Blint said after the game. ?Before every pitch, they have to know what to do with that softball when it?s hit to them. It?s frustrating (because) they?re a good softball team, but I don?t think they?re seven runs better than we are.?
Despite only scoring one run, New London did have nine hits in the loss. Camryn Blint led the way, going 3-4. Kara Krieger was 2-3 and Layney Loyd went 2-4. Carson McSorley was 1-4 with a double and the team?s only run.
Sydni Coleman picked up the loss on the mound for New London. She gave up seven runs (four earned) on 11 hits and one walk over four innings of work.
New London needed just three innings to defeat Mediapolis on Saturday. The Tigers scored seven runs in the first inning and six in the second. Blint shut down Mediapolis, giving up just one earned run on one hit. She also struck out eight Bullettes on the day.
Loyd went 1-1 with a double, two RBIs and a run scored in the win. Coleman was 1-2 with a triple, two RBIs and two runs scored. Alexa Wenger was 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Blint was 0-1 with two RBIs. Kaylor Schulte was 1-1 with two runs scored and McSorley walked twice and scored two runs.
New London jumped out to a 2-0 lead with two runs in the second against West Liberty. The lead was cut in half with one West Liberty run in the fifth, but New London scored three insurance runs in the seventh before giving up one more score in the bottom half of the inning.
Breanna Mettler went 2-3 with a double, an RBI and a run scored in the victory. Sophie Reighard was 1-3 with a double and two RBIs. Blint and Loyd each knocked in one run. Ashlyn McSorley, C. McSorley, Blint and Loyd all scored one run.
