New scam targets subscribers

By Karyn Spory, Mt. Pleasant News

The Mt. Pleasant News has been made aware there is a new scam targeting subscribers of the newspaper.

According to subscribers they have received phone calls from scammers claiming to be from The News and notifying them their subscription is about to expire. The scammer then asks for a credit card number in order to renew the subscription.

This is not how The News conducts business. Postcards are sent to customers to notify them their newspaper subscription is about to expire.

Al Perales, an investigator with the Consumer Protection Divison of the Iowa Attorney General?s Office, recently told The News that scammers will use a ?strong situation? to invoke some kind of emotion ? like fear or excitement ? in order for victims to pull out their wallets. He added scammers also will tell victims the payment must be made ?now.?

If an individual believes they have received a scam phone call, text or email, call the police department at 319-385-1450 to report it.
