NEW LONDON ? Another day another victory for Tiger baseball. The New London boys held Wapello to just two runs, tying the Indians? season low, in a 5-2 Tiger victory.
Wapello opened the game with a run, but New London grabbed the lead with three runs in the bottom of the third to take an early 3-1 lead.
Wapello cut the New London lead to 3-2 with a run in the top of the fifth, but the Tigers added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth and never looked back in a three-run victory.
Isaac McSorley and Britt Noel teamed up for a fantastic night on the mound. McSorley got the win, throwing three innings and giving up one earned run on four hits, while striking out one Wapello batter. Noel threw four innings, giving up one unearned run on five hits, while striking out three batters.
Javis Krieger was 1-2 with a two-RBI triple to lead New London?s offense. Keontae Luckett was 1-1 with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Darius Whaley was 1-2 with an RBI, a run scored and two stolen bases. Sam Loyd was 1-4 with a run scored and Noel went 0-2 with two stolen bases and a run scored.
After the game, head coach Brad Helmerson talked about the value of facing good teams like Wapello in non-conference play.
?They?re always going to be good competition for us,? Helmerson said. ?That?s why we like them in the crossover, because it?s a good test of where you?re at.?
Helmerson also said the team was looking forward to a couple of nights off. It was a packed couple of weeks of baseball for New London. The Tigers had nine games over a two week span, and went 8-1 over that stretch.
?Our kids are ready for a bit of a lesser week,? Helmerson said. ?Next week, we?ve got three games, and that will help us get re-energized. I think they?re ready for the weekend.?
