The Keokuk soccer teams combined for a total of zero goals in the two varsity matches against Mt. Pleasant on Thursday evening. The Panther girls grinded out a 1-0 win at home and the boys? team picked up a 4-0 win in Keokuk.
The Panther girls looked to be the better team in the first half, getting plenty of chances including one that went off the post, but Keokuk?s defense kept Mt. Pleasant off the scoreboard all first half. The Panther defense continued to impress, however, and didn?t allow the Chiefs to get much going themselves. At the halftime buzzer, the score read 0-0.
It wasn?t until the second half that Mt. Pleasant was able to break through. Sydney Doak found Mary West with a pass and West buried the only goal of the night, leading to the 1-0 victory.
Ayden Ross was once again in net for Mt. Pleasant. She recorded the shut out victory.
In Keokuk, the boys? team dominated in route to a 4-0 victory. Payton Kelly opened the scoring with a goal on a penalty kick in the first half. Paris Chounlamany made it 2-0 before halftime with a goal of his own. The assist on that went to Noel Lopez.
Chounlamany stayed hot in the second half. He put the Panthers up 3-0 with his second goal of the day off an assist from Kelly and Jadyn Vongsavath. Vongsavath made it 4-0 later in the half off an assist from Chounlamany.
The Mt. Pleasant defense had its second shut out in a row, and the second recorded by Nathan Rauenbuehler at keeper.
The girls? team is now 3-0 to start the year. The boys? team is 2-0. Both teams will take on Fairfield today (Friday), with the girls traveling and the boys staying at home.
