IOWA CITY ? The Mt. Pleasant girls? track team showed off some major potential on Tuesday night at the Sherwood Relays in Iowa City.
The Panthers took on a handful of larger Eastern Iowa schools. Mt. Pleasant took second with 135 points, topping Bettendorf, Davenport Central, Muscatine, Cedar Rapids Xavier, North Scott and Cedar Rapids Washington. Iowa City High won the meet with 175 points.
Mt. Pleasant won three events on the night. Abby Ryon was the lone individual winner, beating the field in the 3000-meter run with a final time of 11:17.30.
Two Panther relay teams took first place. The 4X800 team of Maggie Jennings, Maggie Cristoforo, Cristina Carthey and Taylor Murray won in 10:28.97, and the shuttle hurdle team of Maddie Williamson, Karsyn Lamm, Kalynn Batey and Serenity Keomanivong placed first in 1:13.07.
The Panthers finished the night with six second-place finishes, including three relays. The sprint medley team of Dani Broeker, Batey, Lamm and Avery Sutter placed second in 2:00.11. The distance medley team of Lyndi Vantiger, Batey, Cristoforo and Ryon took the silver in 4:40.71, and the 4X100 team of Keomanivong, Scandridge, Tuesday Krabill and Maddie Williamson finished second in 58.04 seconds.
Two Panthers placed in the top four in the 800-meter run. Jennings was second in 2:33.89, and Carthey placed fourth in 2:39.76. Murray was second in the 1500-meter run, finishing in 5:16.06, and Lexie Magnani took silver in the shot put, throwing a 35-11.
Sutter placed third in the 100-meter dash, crossing the tape in 13.38 seconds. The 4X100 team of Broeker, Batey, Vantiger and Sutter finished third in 54.54 seconds, and the 4X400 team of Kendall Dascher, Carthey, Cristoforo and Murray took third in 4:33.90.
Sutter had another top-five finish in the 200-meter dash. She crossed the line in 27.89 seconds for fourth place. In the discus throw, Sadie Carrasco placed second with an 88-04, and Alyssa Striegel threw 85-08 for fourth.
Mt. Pleasant had four fifth-place finishes, one of which came from the 4X200 team of Williamson, Virginia Scandridge, Krabill and Vantiger. That team crossed the tape in 2:02.84.
Lamm had two fifth-place finishes in hurdle events. She finished the 100-meter hurdles in 17.36 seconds and the 400-meter hurdles in 1:19.99.
Vantiger placed fifth in the long jump, leaping 15-01. Scandridge won the junior varsity long jump with a leap of 14-07.
The girls? track and field team will be at West Burlington on Tuesday, March 27. That meet will begin at 4:30 p.m., and will also feature the other three Henry County squads (New London, WACO and Winfield-Mt. Union).
