OTTUMWA ? The Mt. Pleasant girls? basketball team traveled to Ottumwa for their final regular season game on Monday night. The Panthers fell 65-54 in the non-conference contest.
The Panthers put up a good fight against their 5A foe. Ottumwa led 11-5 after the first quarter but the Panthers outscored the Bulldogs 13-8 in the second quarter and trailed by just one point, at 19-18, when the halftime buzzer rang.
Ottumwa outscored Mt. Pleasant 21-18 in the third quarter to take a 40-36 lead into the last period. The Bulldogs were able to score their highest point total in the fourth, out-dueling the Panthers 25-18 in the final eight minutes.
Maddie Williamson led the team with 23 points. Kalynn Batey had 12. The Panthers finished the regular season 11-10.
The Panthers have turned their attention towards the regional tournament tonight (Wednesday) in Keokuk. The Panthers and Chiefs will fight for the right to play Fairfield on Saturday, February 17.
The two teams split the regular season series. Mt. Pleasant topped Keokuk 42-36 on the road in early December but the Chiefs took the game in Mt. Pleasant 44-31 in late January.
