The Mt. Pleasant boys? soccer team closed out their conference schedule with a win on Thursday, May 10, topping Washington 4-1. The win helped the Panthers lock up second place in the Southeast Conference, finishing the year 6-2 in league play.
The Panthers had the only two goals of the first half. Ovidio Reyes broke the scoreless tie to make it 1-0 and Carlos Figueroa-Garcia picked up a goal off an assist from Cade Warner.
In the second half, Reyes put in his second goal of the game, getting an assist from Hoi Phung. Warner assisted Medina for the Panthers? fourth goal later on in the second half.
Nathan Rauenbuehler shut the Demons out in the first half. Logan Lee took over in the second half and allowed one score.
Head caoch Neil Schmitz credited his defense with another nice game, especially complimenting the play of Maison Ashton, who controlled the defensive middle of the field and limited the Demons to just two shots on goal all game.
The junior varsity team won 1-0. Hunter Stearns scored on a corner kick from Logan White. Lee picked up the shutout.
The Panther boys went 2-1 at the Independence tournament on Saturday, May 12. The Panthers topped Cedar Valley Christian 4-0, lost to Independence 2-0 and topped Iowa City Liberty 1-0.
Four different Panthers scored in the win over Cedar Valley Christian. Paris Chounlamany, Phung, Reyes and Jayden Vongsavath all scored goals. Vongsavath, Rauenbuehler and White each had one assist.
Noel Lopez scored the lone goal in the win over Liberty, getting an assist from Warner. Rauenbuehler made three saves and earned a shutout victory in net.
The boys? soccer team will be at Central Lee on Tuesday, May 15. They will take on Central Lee at 4 p.m. The Panthers are now 10-5 overall.
