MP wrestling takes sixth in Centerville

CENTERVILLE ? The Mt. Pleasant wrestling team competed against 15 other teams on Saturday at the Big Red Invitational in Centerville. The Panthers finished sixth place, scoring 126 points on the night.


Iowa City High won the meet with 229.5 points. The Panthers did outscore Southeast Conference rival Fairfield, who scored 79 points for 13th.


Mt. Pleasant had seven top five finishes on the day. The Panthers had two wrestlers place third, two place fourth and three place fifth.


Jaden Davis took home a third-place finish for Mt. Pleasant at 152 lbs. He started the day with two byes and pinned Kirksville?s Parker Laudwig in 3:28 to advance to the championship bracket. After losing on a 13-5 major decision to Knoxville?s Joe Hollinrake, Davis bounced back with a pin against Creston Orient-Macksburg?s Rylan Luther, in 5:01.


Zach Beason finished third place at 195 lbs. He started the day with a bye, pinned Ottumwa?s Brody Slack in 19 seconds and beat Chariton?s Reid Walters on a technical fall (19-3, 3:57) to get to the championship bracket.


Beason lost on a 3-2 decision to Matthew Landsperger of Knoxville to get knocked down to the third place match. He faced Interstate 35?s Antonio Arzani, defeating him on an 11-5 decision.


Nate Wallace picked up a fourth-place finish at 145 lbs. He started the day with three straight wins, pinning Kirksville-s Morgan Wilcox and Fairfield?s Sabon Simons in the first two rounds, and taking out Columbus/Winfield-Mt. Union?s Jose Cereze on a technical fall (16-0, 5:41) to get to the championship bracket.


Wallace was pinned in the first period by Creston Orient-Macksburg?s Mitchel Swank to get bumped to the third place match, where he was pinned by Winterset?s Blaek Ryerson in 4:54.


Brennen Bender picked up a fourth-place finish at 182 lbs. He pinned Nic Jewett of Centerville in the first round, got a bye in the second round and pinned Columbus/W-MU?s Chance Malone in the third round to advance to the championship bracket. In the championship bracket, Bender was pinned by Jarron Trausch of PCM. Bender was pinned by Knoxville?s Cody Meyer in the third place match.


Corbin Broeker had a fifth-place finish at 106 lbs. In his first match, Broeker pinned Centerville?s Caden Sales in 50 seconds. After a second-round bye, he was pinned by Coly Lillegard of Bondurant-Farrar in round three. Broeker was able to pick up two techncial falls, one over Winterset?s Dakota Jenkins and one over PCM?s Landon Fenton, to come out of the consolation bracket with fifth.


James DeMeyer gave Mt. Pleasant another top five, finishing fifth place at 170 lbs. He started out with a bye and picked up a win on injury default in the second round. After losing on a 9-2 decision to I-35?s Drew Kirkpatrick int he third round, DeMeyer bounced back with a 4-0 decision over Kirksville?s Vin Kriegshauser and a first-perio0d pin over Iowa City High?s Brandon Lalla to clinch fifth.


The team?s third fifth-place finish came from Dalton Bass at 220 lbs. Bass started the day off with a pin in the third period against I-35?s Brock Thompson. He picked up a second-round bye but lost in the third round to Ottumwa?s Shai Guido on a 14-11 decision. Bass rebounded with pins over Creston Orient-Macksburg?s Trevor Kinyon and Centerville?s Brady Clark in his final two matches to give the Panthers another top-five spot.


Garrett Boecker finished sixth place at 160 lbs. Dalton Smith was ninth at 132 lbs. Dalton Moyle finished 12th at 126 lbs. Henry Lutovsky was 13th at 285 lbs., and Conner Coleman finished 15th at 120 lbs.


Columbus/W-MU placed 15th with 52.5 points. The top finish for the Wildcats went to Cam Rice at 132 lbs. Rice pinned PCM?s Connor Fagen in the first round, got a bye in the second round and pinned Creston Orient-Macksburg?s Kelby Luther in the third round.


Rice lost to Chariton?s Gabe Ruepke by technical fall (21-6, 4:39) in the championship bracket, but he bounced back with a pin over Winterset?s Kruise Kiburz in 51 seconds to pick up the bronze.


Tucker Bright picked up a fifth-place finish for Columbus/W-MU at 120 lbs. Brody Barton (113 lbs.), Juanito Piper (138 lbs.), Noah Freeman (152 lbs.) and Chance Malone (182 lbs.) each placed eighth. J.T. Cunningham was 10th at 170 lbs. Jose Cerezo was 13th at 145 lbs., and Garrett Palmer placed 14th at 126 lbs.
