MP wrestlers compete at Williamsburg

WILLIAMSBURG ? The Mt. Pleasant wrestling team was in action on Saturday in the Williamsburg round-robin tournament. The Panthers joined Grinnell, Pella, Perry, Waterloo West and Williamsburg in the contest.

The Panthers took home five top-three finishes on the day. Mt. Pleasant had two wins, two second place finishes and one third.

The two wins for Mt. Pleasant came from James DeMeyer at 170 lbs. and Dalton Bass at 220 lbs.

DeMeyer had three pins to start his day out. He pinned Pella?s Ben Nelson in 1:45, Waterloo West?s Mac Pedro in 33 seconds and Perry?s Cole Snyder in 2:55. DeMeyer picked up a 16-1 technical fall over Grinnell?s Wyatt Hunter in the fourth round and finished the day off with a 5-1 decision over Williamsburg?s Tucker Stanerson.

Bass receieved a bye in the first round and picked up pins in his next two matches. Bass pinned Braydon Peterson of Pella in 19 seconds and Alexander Tapia of Perry in 1:23. He gritted out a 1-0 decision over Grinnell?s Kamrin Steveson in the fourth round and pinned Billy Grout of Williamsburg in 4:24 during the fifth round.

Brennen Bender (182 lbs.) and Zach Beason (195 lbs). each picked up a second-place finish for the Panthers.

Bender received a bye in the first and third rounds. He pinned Scott Chaffin of Pella in 2:40 in his first match, beat Brenden Burton of Waterloo West on a 12-0 major decision in his next match and finished the day against Williamsburg?s Isaac Maser, who pinned Bender in 46 seconds.

Beason pinned Pella?s Kaleb Dietze in 1:38 for a first-round win, and then had three-straight byes. He fell in the fifth round to Williamsburg?s Josh Holub on a 9-4 decision.

Henry Lutovsky picked up the bronze for the Panthers at 285 lbs. In the first round, Lutovsky was pinned by Pella?s Tyler VanderMolen in 2:55. He pinned Waterloo West?s Armin Hadiziric in a 41-second second round match. Lutovsky received a couple of byes and finished his day off with a 4:41 pin fall over Williamsburg?s Cole Cremeens.

Garrett Boecker (160 lbs.) and Corbin Broeker (106 lbs.) placed fourth for the Panthers. Conner Coleman (120 lbs.) was fifth, Brayden Ackles (113 lbs.), Dalton Moyle (126 lbs.) and Abe Wilson (138 lbs.) each finished sixth.

The Panther wrestlers will now turn their attention to a huge dual meet tonight (Tuesday) against Washington. The Panthers and Demons both come in to the meet undefeated in Southeast Conference play, meaning the conference title will belong to tonight?s winner. That meet will begin at 6:30 p.m.
