The Mt. Pleasant Community School District is ready for its summer construction projects as board members approved contracts for the second phase of the elementary school air conditioning project and the bid for the Mapleleaf paving project Monday night.
Members of the Mt. Pleasant School Board approved four bid packages for the elementary air conditioning project, which is the second phase of a project to cool down the district?s four elementary school buildings. Frank Millard Company was awarded the general construction package with a bid of $452,640 as well as the mechanical bid at $1,228,000. Johnson Controls, Inc., took the controls bid at a price of $371,000 and electrical work will be done by Mohrfeld Electric with a bid price of $318,000. The total contract amount was $2,369,460.
District Superintendent John Henriksen said construction crews will begin work as soon as school is released and the three smaller elementary schools ? Salem, Harlan and Lincoln ? will be completed by the end of July. Van Allen will be complete by the first of August.
As for the Mapleleaf paving project, the low bid, from Fye Excavating in Sperry, was approved. Fye?s bid came in at $819,185. The school district is partnering with the city on the project. In early conversations, the city and school district believed the state would fund $500,000 of the estimated $1 million project. However, board President David McCoid told his fellow board members the state?s portion has been lowered to $460,000. The city and school district will share the remainder of the costs. As previously reported by The News, the project is set to begin on May 15 and should be wrapped up by Aug. 3.
During the meeting the school board also adopted the fiscal year 2019 budget of $34,673,579. The district tax rate was also approved at $13.82 per $1,000 valuation. Director of Business and Finance Ed Chabal noted the tax rate was a 16 cent increase over last fiscal year.
The district calendar for the 2018-19 school year was also approved Monday night. School will begin on Thursday, Aug. 23 and will conclude on May 30, barring any snow days. Graduation will be held on May 19.
In other business, the board:
? Approved Tripple R driving school for the upcoming school year. The cost of the course will be $330 and $305 for students on free and reduced lunch. This is a slight decrease from last year?s prices.
? Approved a ten-cent increase for hot lunch prices. Elementary School students will pay $2.30; middle school, $2.40; and $2.50 for high school students.
? Approved school registration fees at $50 per pupil for elementary, middle and high school students.
The next regular meeting of the Mt. Pleasant School Board will be held on Monday, May 14, at 6 p.m. in the high school media center.
