MP, Fairfield fight for top SEC spots

FAIRFIELD ? It?s the biggest night in the year in the Southeast Conference basketball race for both boys? and girls? basketball.

Tonight (Friday) the two top teams in both standings will compete for SEC glory. The first place Fairfield girls will host second-place Mt. Pleasant at 6 p.m., and the second-place Fairfield boys will host first-place Mt. Pleasant at 7:30 p.m.

The Panthers and Trojans are meeting for second time this season. The two squads played a doubleheader at Mt. Pleasnat in early December.

The Mt. Pleasant girls had a 9-8 lead over Farifield after one quarter in the SEC opener but the Trojans outscored them 33-21 in the next two quarters and a fourth-quarter rally fell short as the Trojans got out with a 53-48 win.

The Panthers had two double-digit scorers in the loss. Maddie Williamson had 16 poitns and Kalynn Batey scored 15. Amber Nichole Buch scored 12 points to lead the Trojans.

The boys? game was a runaway for Mt. Pleasant. The Panthers jumped out to a 21-9 lead after one quarter and cruised to a 73-44 win. Brady Sartorius scored 30 points int he win and Jordan Magnani had 14.

Fairfield got 18 points from junior guard Carson Crile in the loss. The Trojans were without junior big man Austin Simpson down the stretch. Simpson went down with an ankle injury in the first half.

Since that night in early December, it?s been all Panthers and Trojans. Mt. Pleasant and Fairfield are a combined 12-0 against the rest of the conference. The Panther boys and Trojan girls are both 4-0 halftway through the conference season, and the Trojan boys and Panther girls are both 3-1.
