On Wednesdays at Winfield-Mt. Union Schools, beginning June 6, a free eight-week program called ?Sharing from the Garden? will take place.
Kelsey Pretz, Allison Hadley and Kelley Harris are Iowa State students serving as interns in the Rising Star program through the Iowa State University Extension and Outreach in Region 20.
This summer, they will be leading the program. The workshop is focused on teaching youth about local produce and how to prepare it. It will be an engaging experience providing hands on opportunities where youth will prepare recipes using local produce, as well as an opportunity for the youth to shop at their very own farmers market held at the end of the program.
The hands on activities also include making smoothies using ?blender bikes,? a stationary bike with an attached blender, powered by the movement of the bike. The program is partnering with the summer school programs and the free school lunch programs to reach elementary students throughout the summer.
