Listening to God

?It was a good answer that was once given by a poor woman to a minister who asked her, ?What is faith?? She replied, ?I am ignorant, and I cannot answer well, but I think it is taking God at his word.??

What a great description of faith and a practical thought on listening to God. A practice many people are poor at in their walk with the Lord. We are good at talking, but what about listening?

Deuteronomy 30 gives some practical thoughts on listening to God.

First: God?s Word Informs the Mind

?Now what I am commanding of you today is not too difficult for you or beyond your reach ... No, the word is very near you; it is in your mouth and in your heart so you may obey it. (Deut. 30:11, 14)

God gives us the information; we need to apply it by faith. His instruction is not hard and he is closer than we think.

?Be still and know that I am God.? (Psalm 46:10)

?Charles Stanley says, ?If we are listening to God, we must be quiet and let him do the talking.?

Second: God?s Word Challenges the Will

?See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction. For I command you today to love the Lord your God, to walk in obedience to Him and to keep His commands, decrees and laws, then you will live, and increase, and the Lord your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to possess.? (Deut 30:15-16)

Before we are willing to obey God, we must submit to his will. Did you know God talks about heart circumcision in the Old Testament? We always hear about the physical act.

In the New Testament when we admit our sin, believe in Jesus and receive Him as Lord, we have circumcision of the heart. ?Circumcise your hearts, therefore, and do not be stiff-necked any longer.? (Deut 10:16)

Third: God?s Word Moves the Heart

A couple of weeks ago on a Saturday, it was raining very hard. I was under the impression our cat Molly was outside. So I went to the screen door and called her name three times ?Molly, Molly, Molly? with no response. I turned to find the cat standing beside me looking up wondering what I wanted.

As the cat was responsive to the call, God?s word calls us for a response. God?s word moves the heart to action.

?This day I call the heavens and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses. Now choose life, so that you and your children may live.? (Deut. 30:19)

Question: What is faith? It is taking God at His word!
