The Iowa Wesleyan softball team took on Spalding University Sunday afternoon, their sixth game in a four day span thanks to the weather this spring. The Tigers split with the Golden Eagles, taking game one 5-3 and falling 8-0 in game two.
In the opening game, Iowa Wesleyan scored all of their runs in the top of the third inning. Ashley Machholz started the scoring off with a double down the left field line to bring Emmy Rodriguez across the plate. Serena Almodovar hit a two run single up the middle, and Haley Varga capped the inning off with a two-run home run to center field. The Tigers took a 5-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth, but Spalding was able to get a run back off of an error by the Tigers.
Both teams failed to score for three innings, and after the Tigers did not score in the top of the seventh, the Golden Eagles made one final attempt to cut into the IW lead. They would get two runs across, but Iowa Wesleyan?s defense came up with stops to seal the win.
Samantha McIlwain earned the win, pitching a complete game with four strikeouts and allowing one earned run. Ashley Machholz and Serena Almodovar each went 2-4 in the game, while Haley Varga finished with two RBIs off of her home run.
Spalding kept the IW offense off balance in game two, with Iowa Wesleyan recording just three hits in the game. The Tigers fell behind in the first inning, and Spalding would add runs in the second, fourth, and sixth inning to secure the 8-0 win.
Sydnee Stalker, Julie Dodd, and Jaiden Rogers each had one hit in the final game of the day for Iowa Wesleyan.
The Tigers will have a short turn around. They will host Principia College today (Monday) for a SLIAC doubleheader at 3 p.m. IW is 6-18 overall and 5-7 in conference play.
