COCOA BEACH, Fla. ? The season has begun for the Iowa Wesleyan softball team. The Tigers kicked off the spring with four games in Cocoa Beach, Fla., and will have four to go in their Florida trip.
The Tigers fell in all four of their games, getting swept 10-0 and 13-2 by Keiser University on Sunnday, and 15-0 and 13-1 by Missouri Valley on Monday.
IW was no hit in their first game of the season, the 10-0 loss against Keiser, but the Tigers did have a lead for the majority of game two.
The Tigers loaded the bases in the first inning of their second game against Keiser. Sydnee Stalker was hit by the pitch, bringing home one runner, and Julie Dodd made it 2-0 with an RBI groundout.
Starting pitcher Samantha McIlwain kept the Tigers in the lead for four innings, shutting Keiser out in the first three and giving up just one run in the fourth to maintain a 2-1 lead.
Keiser found their bats late in the game, however. IW gave up six runs in the fifth inning, three of which came on a home run, and six more in the sixth. The Tiger offense was stagnant late in the game and IW fell by 11.
Despite the loss, McKenzie Copher had a multi-hit game, finishing 2-3 with a run scored for the Tigers.
The IW defense struggled against Missouri Baptist on Monday. The Tigers had four errors in their first game and seven in their second game. This allowed for an explosive Spartan offense to run away with both contests.
The lone run scored in the two games against Missouri Baptist came in the fourth inning of game two. Stalker had an RBI groundout to put IW on the board.
IW is playing two games this morning (Wednesday). The Tigers have a 10 a.m. date with Missouri Baptist and a 12 p.m. game against Gallaudet University.
