AUBURNDALE, Fl. ? Iowa Wesleyan opened up their spring break trip against Fairleigh Dickinson University - Florham Sunday afternoon. The Tigers offense struggled throughout both games, leading to a 9-1 opening game loss, and a 7-2 loss in the second game of the double-header.
The Tigers were outhit 10-5 in the first game of the day. Chazz Brown opened the game with a single to the pitcher in the first inning. Iowa Wesleyan?s next hit didn?t come until the fourth inning when Parker Leland hit a single to right field with one out.
In the fifth inning, Iowa Wesleyan led off with a single by Michael Noonan and Jacob Leonard doubled to center field. The Devils walked two Tiger batters, and the lone run for IW came when Noonan scored on a passed ball. The Tigers were unable to take advantage of the other runners and ended the inning with three runners on base.
Ben Steorts had the final hit for the Tigers in the sixth inning, leading off the inning with a single to right field. Cody Brown earned the loss in the opening game for the Tigers.
In the second game of the afternoon, Iowa Wesleyan continued to struggle against Fairleigh Dickinson. Despite IW?s 7-6 advantage in hits, the Tigers were only able to plate two runs in the game. The Devils finished with six hits, seven runs, and six runs batted in, taking advantage of eight walks.
In the first inning, it looked like the Tiger offense had settled in. With two outs, Parker Leland and Ben Steorts each singled, and Tyler Cooksey followed with a walk to load the bases. IW was unable to take advantage, however and left the bases loaded.
Joshua Sanchez tried to start a rally in the fourth inning, hitting a single to right field with one out. He stole second, and Jacob Leonard was hit by a pitch to put two on base for the Tigers. Iowa Wesleyan once again stranded the runners.
Joseph Belarde led the fifth inning off with a single and after an error by the pitcher, he advanced to third. Belarde would score the first run for the Tigers after a balk by Fairleigh Dickinson. He would lead off the top of the seventh inning for IW as well. Belarde hit a solo homerun for the Tigers final run of the game.
Stephen Larson took the loss for game two. He pitched 5.2 innings and recorded four strikeouts. Iowa Wesleyan is now 5-3 on the season.
