ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? The Iowa Wesleyan basketball teams were swept by Fontbonne University on Saturday. The men?s team lost a thriller 84-83 and the women fell 67-53.
The men?s team nearly pulled off another comeback victory. The Tigers trailed 84-80 with just 16 seconds remaining, but still got off a potential game-winning shot.
Mitchell Drey cut the Fontbonne lead to one point at 84-83. Fontbonne?s Jared Woodcock missed the front end of a one-and-one, giving the ball back to IW. Jake Neubauer put up a three-pointer in the final seconds but it didn?t fall and the Griffins escaped with a one-point victory.
Drey scored 26 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to secure a double-double. He also led the team with two blocked shots. Elijah Johnson had 18 points. Camron Mack had an efficient day, going 4-5 from three-point land en route to a 14-opint performance.
Neubauer finished the game with 11 points and five assists. Brock Butler scored 10 opints and Austin Banks finished the day with four points and seven assists.
The women?s team trailed 42-32 at halftime and were outscored by four points in the final two quarters. Allie Massner led the team with 16 points and three steals.
Darby Massner had 11 points in the loss. Catilyn Welch and Josie Zerrusen scored seven points each. LaStella Slack had six. Ahlia Tai scoerd four points and Emily Hammel finished with two.
Both squads will be back in action tonight (Wednesday). They?ll host Eureka College in their final home game. The women will tip things off at 6 p.m., with the men following.
