Iowa Wesleyan softball drops two at Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. ? Iowa Wesleyan began conference play Wednesday afternoon against the Griffins of Fontbonne University.


IW led early in the first game, but were unable to maintain the lead and suffered a 3-1 loss. They followed with a 19-3 loss in the final game of the day.


The Tigers were able to get an early lead in the opening game of the double-header. Serena Almodovar singled to the pitcher with one out and advanced to second on a wild pitch to get the offense going for IW. Jena Miller came through with a single through the right side to drive in Almodovar for the Tigers first run.


The IW defense was solid through the first two innings, but Fontbonne was able to record four hits and take advantage of an error by the Tigers in the bottom of the third. The Griffins plated three runs in the inning to take a 3-1 lead.


It was a defensive battle for the remainder of the game, but the damage was already done. IW was unable to get any more runs across the plate and fell to the Griffins to open the day. Jena Miller led the Tigers with two hits and an RBI.


The Tigers were hoping to bounce back in the final game of the day, and Ashley Machholz tried to spark the offense with a leadoff triple. IW was unable to take advantage of an error by Fontbonne and failed to score in first inning. The Griffins, however, jumped out to an early lead, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first.


Iowa Wesleyan was able to get two runs back to cut into the Griffin lead.


Sydnee Stalker singled up the middle with one out, and Jaiden Rogers followed with a single to center field. Emmy Rodriguez loaded the bases when she drew a walk, and Ashley Machholz picked up an RBI with a single to third base.


Julie Dodd was able to score the second run for the Tigers when Fontbonne?s catcher had a throwing error.


Fontbonne would go on to score fourteen runs over the next three innings to extend their lead over the Tigers. IW would add one more run in the top of the fourth. Stalker drew a leadoff walk, and Jamee Houchins came in as a pinch runner. She stole second and advanced to third on a groundout. Rodriguez singled to right field to drive in Houchins for IW?s final run of the game.


Machholz was 2-3 at the dish with an RBI for IW. The Tigers are now 1-13 overall and 0-2 in SLIAC play. They will take on Spalding University on Saturday, March 24 at 1 p.m. Eastern time.
