Iowa Wesleyan baseball team drops two games to Eureka

With the threat of bad weather this weekend, the SLIAC West Division series against Eureka was moved up a day, with the doubleheader being played on Friday, April 13. Iowa Wesleyan?s struggles in conference play continued as they dropped both games of the doubleheader by scores of 12-4 and 6-2.

Eureka took a one-run lead in the top of the second inning, but their lead didn?t last long with Iowa Wesleyan tying the game when Sebastian Gonzalez was able to score on an error by the Red Devils.

Iowa Wesleyan found themselves in a hole late in the game, trailing 12-1 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Gregory Gonzalez came in as a pinch hitter and homered to left field in his first at bat as a Tiger. Michael Noonan scored on the play, bringing the score to 12-3. Justin Klug hit a sacrifice fly to bring Michael Rojas in for the Tigers final run of the game.

In game two, Iowa Wesleyan once again had the answer to an early run by the Red Devils. The Tigers run came on an throwing error by Eureka when Alex Payne stole second. Chazz Brown was able to score on the play. Eureka added a run in each of the next two innings.

Both teams shut each other down in the fourth and fifth innings, but the Red Devils would get their offense going again in the sixth. They scored three runs to take a 6-1 lead over the Tigers. Iowa Wesleyan came to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and got a run back. Payne singled through the left side to bring home Noonan, cutting the Eureka lead to four runs.

The Tigers were unable to get anything going in the final three innings, leading to a 6-2 loss to the Red Devils. Iowa Wesleyan recorded four hits in each of the games against Eureka.

The Tigers are 6-24 on the season and 0-13 in conference play. Their series finale against Eureka was scheduled for this afternoon in Eureka, Ill., but it has been postponed due to weather. At this time, a makeup date has not been set.
