The Iowa Wesleyan baseball team took on Knox College in a non-conference game. Tuesday?s games were originally scheduled for March 6, but were postponed to Tuesday due to weather. The weather still wasn?t ideal baseball weather, but the games were able to be played. IW dropped the first game 1-4 to the Prairie Fire. The Tigers held the lead the second game, but they were unable to maintain it and fell 5-4.
In the opening game of the doubleheader, Knox took an early lead, scoring one run in the first inning and adding a run in the bottom of of the third. Iowa Wesleyan?s first run came in the top of the fourth inning. Joseph Belarde reached base on an error by the third baseman and avanced to second on a passed ball. Alex Payne moved Belarde to third with a sacrifice, and Belarde was able to score when Benjamin Steorts (FR/Worden, MT) reached on an error by the left fielder.
The Tigers were unable to get any more runs across the plate in the final three innings of play, while Knox extended their lead to 4-1 after plating two runs in the bottom of the fifth. IW finished the game with two hits and an error. Matthew Murphy and Steorts each recorded the hit for Iowa Wesleyan.
In the second game of the day, Iowa Wesleyan was able to get their offense going to take the early lead. Matthew Murphy came to the plate with one out and hit a solo home run to give IW the 1-0 advantage. Knox answered in the bottom of the second, scoring one run off of two hits to tie the game up.
Iowa Wesleyan was able to regain the lead in the top of the third inning. Belarde drew a leadoff walk, and Murphy doubled to put runners in scoring position for the Tigers. Steorts doubled, knocking in IW?s two runs in the inning to bring the score to 3-1.
The Tigers would add a run in the top of the fifth inning to take a 4-1 lead over the Prairie Fire. Murphy led the inning off with a walk, and Payne followed with a single to put runners on first and second. Steorts picked up an RBI when he grounded out to the shortstop to bring Murphy home. Knox would get three runs in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game for the second time.
After a scoreless sixth inning, Iowa Wesleyan came to the plate in the top of the seventh. The Tigers were shut down by the Prairie Fire in the seventh. Knox came up in the bottom of the seventh and with one out, they were able to get a triple and score on an error to walk off on IW.
Murphy led the Tigers offense, finishing the game with two hits, including a home run. He scored three runs and had an RBI.
IW will return to conference play on Thursday, April 5, when they host MacMurray College. First pitch of the doubleheader is set for 1 p.m. Iowa Wesleyan is now 6-15 on the season.
