HCHC SHIIP program saves residents money

Choosing Medicare and related health care coverage can be challenging. That?s why SHIIP, the Senior Health Insurance Information Program, offers confidential, one-on-one counseling throughout Iowa by trained volunteers.

This free, confidential service, offered by the State of Iowa, helps Iowans make informed decisions about Medicare and other health coverage. Henry County Health Center (HCHC) is the local sponsor for SHIIP in Henry County and offers counseling by three SHIIP counselors.

The impact of the SHIIP program was significant in 2017, as people served by HCHC SHIIP volunteer counselors saved over $238,115 and counselors recorded 549 client contacts. The SHIIP counselors are trained by the state and do not sell or promote any insurance companies, policies or agents.

Are you going to be eligible for Medicare in the near future? Have you been on Medicare and want to better understand what it offers? Do you have a family member you help with Medicare issues?

SHIIP counselors can help in the following ways: Answer questions about Medicare benefits; find the best drug plan; assist in finding resources that may help with prescription costs; sort through options regarding Medicare supplements or Medicare Advantage Plans; answer questions about going on Medicare due to disability; answer questions about insurance benefits when turning 65; help figuring out unpaid claims; assistance deciding about Medicare enrollment or working longer for health insurance benefits and evaluating costs; and help with all Medicare and related insurance and coverage options.

In addition to counseling, ?Welcome to Medicare? seminars are offered throughout the year and covers Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, the prescription drug benefit (Part D), Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare supplement insurance.
