What should a person want to do with their life?
As the reporter who handles the record page, I get a lot of obituaries coming across my desk. I?m not going to get overly philosophical here, but I will say that seeing so many obituaries can make a person think about what they are doing with their own life and the different experiences one has had.
When my boyfriend and I started dating, one of the questions he asked me was what I wanted to accomplish in life. I answered that I wanted to be happy, help people, fall in love and raise a family. I was pretty vague, but honest.
I would like to say that I am moderately happy, actively volunteer, am in love and hope to someday raise a family. So it?s mostly just that last thing that I haven?t done yet.
I?m only 24, so I don?t quite feel ready to have crossed everything off of the to-do list for my life.
A few months ago, a couple ladies in the office and I were discussing powered wheelchairs and that commercial where the people are all sitting around the Grand Canyon. We wondered if the people in the commercial could really drive their power chairs that close to the canyon?s edge.
An idea of a trip to the Grand Canyon sparked my interest and I decided that I should do that at some point in my life.
I began to make a list of other things I would like to do someday and I began to write my bucket list on a hot pick sticky note on my desk.
Some of the things on my list are things that my mother would probably try to talk me out of for safety reasons. For example, a friend of mine went cliff diving once. I think that sounds fun. It?s on the list.
My dad used to go skydiving long before I ever came along. Skydiving made my list too.
I used to run cross-country in high school and college, so on my someday list is running a marathon. I should probably run the Bix 7 in Davenport before I commit to a full 26.2 miles though. The Bix 7 is a seven-mile road race in the summer in Davenport each year in memory of jazz great and Davenport native Bix Biederbecke. I think I?ll try the Bix this summer.
One of the hardest things to accomplish on my hot pink post-it will be to fill all of the pages in my passport with travel stamps before I have to renew it.
Each time you go to a foreign country, you get a stamp in your passport when you go through customs. I don?t remember off the top of my head how many stamp-able pages are in the back of my passport, though.
I have a few stamps already from when I went with the Iowa Wesleyan College choir to Europe a couple years ago. Passports expire every 10 years, so I?m not sure that I will make my goal of filling up my passport right away. I think I?ll save that one for retirement.
My list is somewhat short so far, but I figure I have a lot of time to add to it. After all, I?m only 24.
